Awarded UNESCO world heritage status in 1999 and known for being the first wine landscapes listed by UNESCO, Saint-Émilion bears the name of a Breton Monk who lived an exemplary life and did miracles, in this part of the world. The medieval town embraces churches dating back as far as the 12^th century. Between the 8^th and the 18^th century, several religious communities co-lived in Saint- Émilion like the Benedictines, Augustinians, Franciscans, Dominicans and sisters Ursulines, confirmed by the presence of a large number of monasteries, convents and churches.
